GANDHI RURAL REHABILITATION CENTRE

The forming of GRRC
1 Alampundi is a small village situated in Gingee Taluk, a drought prone area of Tamil Nadu. In 1983, a few physically handicapped persons came together to take steps to come out of their poverty.  That was the beginning of the Gandhi Rural Rehabilitation Centre (GRRC).  It started as a weaving workshop and a weavers’ training center.  With the years, the activities of GRRC diversified in answer to the needs and requests of the villagers.  In December1983, GRRC was registered as a Society under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975.

The activities of the Society slowly covered the following areas:
- Polio Treatment Centre
- Hostel for polio affected children
- Workshop for the handicapped (a cotton handloom-weaving unit as well as a tailoring & embroidery unit)
- Malarchi – a social forestry programme
- Anjali , a day-care center for mentally handicapped children

These diverse programs have one thing in common, that is, they all work towards the rehabilitation in the rural areas.

The polio treatment center and Anjali undertake the work of identification and treatment of polio-affected and mentally handicapped children in the area. The hostel ensures a formal education for the polio-affected children.  The workshop for the handicapped and Malarchi serves employment schemes for the handicapped.

GRRC also tries to reverse the trend of forest degradation.  In 1987, they started to work on a 3-acre dry land and converted it to a beautiful green belt. Next, they concentrated on tree planting in several lakes.   Now, GRRC maintains a nursery in the same 3-acre land to produce saplings for sale.  This unit also provides employment to handicapped people.
