CHITRALAYA TRUST The Chtiralaya Trust was started in July 1988, by Mr. R. Paneerselvan and four other Trustees namely, Messers. P. Morrison, P.M. Fernandez, Monique Fanovard and A. Sudhandiram. The object of the trust is to provide income generation for handicapped and poor people and to raise their socio-economic status in the society. As such, they employ disabled people. In the beginning they produced sleeping mats, which was woven and painted by leprosy cured patients. The market for these products slowly decreased because of new products made of cotton. Hence, they were forced to make new cotton products. Secondly they started manufacturing Miniature paintings in cotton clothe, visiting cards, letter pads, T-Shirts. Then they added Batik products such as Wall Hangings, Greeting cards, Napkins, Tablecloth, Bedspread and Lampshades (in Batik, Beads) to their range. The Chitralaya Trust now employs 12 artisans. They select the artisans initially as trainees and stipend will be given to them during the training period. After successful completion of training, they will be placed as “regular employees”. Apart from the salary to the artisans they are paid incentive once in a year. They also have coverage of E.P.F (Employment Provident Fund) for all the regular staff which gives them retire benefits also.
